“I Am Enough”

Posted on March 31, 2014

Today we’d like to introduce you (or reintroduce you, if you’re already familiar with her) to speaker and writer Brené Brown. In The Gifts of Imperfection, she writes a manifesto that every parent needs to hear and instill in their children, “”No matter what gets done and how much is left undone, I am enough.” We all struggle with feelings of inadequacy and fears that we are not worthy of love or attention. Brown writes that instead, we need to “let go of who you think you’re supposed to be and embrace who you are.”

Isn’t this what we want for our children? The most common heartfelt desire for parents about their children is simply wanting them to be happy. Whatever that means to the unique individual they are. Shouldn’t we as parents give ourselves the same freedom? Being truly yourself allows you to relax, be present, and feel joy.

About parenting, she writes:

I’m not a parenting expert. In fact, I’m not sure that I even believe in the idea of ‘parenting experts.’ I’m an engaged, imperfect parent and a passionate researcher. I’m an experienced mapmaker and a stumbling traveler. Like many of you, parenting is by far my boldest and most daring adventure.

Brené Brown is currently taking registration for an online class based on The Gifts of Imperfection scheduled for April 3. More information about the class can be found on her blog.
